An alternative would be to obfuscate (i.e. randomly arrange the letters) the spoiler text and then make the script de-obfuscate it on-hover. Just a thought.

There should be a microformat for spoilers, to make this kind of thing more accessible.

This was just an idea.. I couldn't find anyone else trying to solve this issue. But .. give it a go. Seems to me that would only work for text though.
