Whether or not positive and negative sterotypes are used are kind of besides the point, its the fact that a stereotype was used at all. Let me give an example, if you say im a jew so I have money, os that negative or positive? Even if you think its positive, the fact that the stereotype is validated implies that other stereotypes are true.

Now this particular joke is pretty tame, certainly. If he wanted to he could have add the qualifier " more talking, bringing more perspectives to the table" or something. But the way he said it could have been interpreted as a stereotype, and therefore is problematic

Thanks for your reply, good point!

i appreciate it when people do that instead of just downvoting - which doesn't exactly stimulate communication :) (It would be cool if downvoting on HN would only be permitted if also commenting...)

Wow this is so useful for um security

I assumed the title was about boilerplate in terms of some skeleton or framework you download. Turns out this is different from what youre talking about (verbosity). Its interesting that even in programming jargon we have two uses for the same term. They are not totally separate though. The repetitive, DRY violations eventually get abstracted into a framework, at which point the boilerplate becomes ok. And if its still too verbose, than another boiler may arose to encompass it.

Well, when you have several projects using same framework/skeleton, and the latter is downloaded and copied over and over again in every project - it became verbose on highest level and can be called boilerplate.

The author doesn't understand what boilerplate means.

>> Any time we write similar-looking code over and over, that’s considered copy-pasta.

is what i'd call it.

Also a fucking shitload safer

Ubuntu.

I agree, simple safe choice. There a various lightweight versions if the base version doesn't work well on the machine.

And, annoyingly to those who prefer other distros, one major selling point for *ubuntu distros is that nearly every aspect of setup/configuration/adjustment is documented somewhere, be it a blog post, wiki, stack exchange, forum post, etc.

For certain less popular desktop distros (e.g. slackware, arch, and to a certain extent fedora, debian, etc.) there are lots of little things where you find some decent documentation, but you have to know how to adapt it to your particular OS version. Things like that kill a beginner's curiosity, because in the beginning, you just want to get some random thing working, not debug linux kernel versions and package repositories!

Definitely agree! Ubuntu have tons of support all over internet. Virtually any problem has been already solved by someone on the internet which is incredible if you are beginner. As for lightweight version of Ubuntu I would recommend Ubuntu Mate.

I know one building in particular that may be problematic. It also happens to be sinking.

Being obvious here, but what about pot? Have personally done mushrooms 5 or so times. and while it can be pretty casual with a small dose, it easily gets into the realm of somewhat-spiritual meta-thinking (after a few of these experiences I didnt much desire them anymore) . Similar to LSD in this regard, and probably not the best thing to mix with alcohol.

This is funny but dont get cocky because STEM is not immune. Think about abstract design patterns or something

The fundamental problem--vanity publications that will publish anything for money--persists in all fields these days.

Nice. Theres a great website for finding punk and metal shows for portland as well (generally multiple per night, its a great scene) , I forget the name but its googlable
