It is called "managing up"


Which is easy if you have a good manager, and a great way to get fired if you have a bad one, which I think was the original question posed here, how do you "manage up" a bad manager.

The general answer is: quit. That's where the saying "people don't leave bad jobs, they leave bad managers" comes from, there aren't a lot of great solutions for dealing with that power dynamic.
